Original ARDUN OHV conversion for 24 stud Ford flathead.: The head numbers are 473 and 483. Their condition is near mint. They were bought new in the early 1950's by a car collector in the Dallas, Texas area, assembled on a block, and run on a test stand for several hours while the builder tuned and studied it. He then disassembled it and put the heads on a shelf in his shop. I bought the heads from him in 1987 after seeing his ad in Hemmings Motor News. Photos 1 and 2: Show the original valve covers in place on each ARDUN head. The builder added a STELLING breather as the photos show. The breathers are two piece cast aluminum and are rare collector pieces from the forties. Also shown is the 37 page ARDUN infomation brochure which I prepared in the 1980's for fifty members of the ARDUN Owners Club organized by Robert Whitehead, a/k/a Mr. Ardun. This 37 page brochure is also included. Photos 3 and 4: Show the bottom side of the heads so you can see the valves and hemispherical combustion chambers and their excellent condition. Photo 5: Shows the top side of the heads with the rocker arm shaft assemblies removed. Notice their mint condition. Two of the eight newly machined spark plug funnels are shown in place, one with the black knurled top piece attached. There are no spark plug wires or connector extensions with this ARDUN. Those parts are readily available and are superior to the original wiring and connectors made in 1946. Photo 6: Shows the top side of the heads with the rocker arm shaft assemblies in place. Each shaft also requires a series of springs (not included with this ARDUN) between the moving parts. Don Ferguson, the current builder of the reproduction ARDUN, has had the spring set made in stainless steel and sells them for $200 a set. Photo 7: Shows the numbers 473 and 483 stamped into the heads. The ARDUN head numbers are believed to have started with number 101 and went to about 500. That is 400 heads produced and with two per set, the total run has been estimated to be 200 sets. That production number includes both the early front water offtake design and the later middle water offtake design made to go on the flathead blocks for the years 1949 through 1953. Photo 8: Shows the original valley cover part number 1010. In the original ARDUN literature, this part is referred to as a ³Bracket Plate - 1010² . Photos 9 and 10: Shows the two intake manifolds (part numbers 1009) with the crossover piece (part # 1069) attached. The crossover piece is a newly made one by Ronnie Roadster, a long time Ardun owner. I show both the topside and bottom side view of the intakes so that the Buyer can see where the intakes have been altered in shape (for some unknown reason) on the very rear of the castings. Photo 11: Shows the complete ARDUN assembly (with the valve covers removed) and how the various pieces appear when set onto the flathead block. It is pretty awesome all assembled. Photo 12: Shows the various related parts that are included with this ARDUN. (The oil pump is not included). I purchased these parts new or had them custom machined to original specs back in 1988 and 1989. The included parts are new Champion spark plug special threaded inserts to accommodate the custom plug size, new threaded head studs, new pushrods by Smith Brothers Mfg., new lifters, new custom machined spark plug tubes, new design knurled top pieces for the tubes in black, and new black rubber boots that hold the spark plug wiring in place at the top of each tube. Also included are two original water offtake castings which attach one to each head and a 37 page ARDUN infomation brochure which I put together in the 1980's for fifty members of the ARDUN Owners Club organized by Robert Whitehead, a/k/a Mr. Ardun. I would like to recognize and credit the following people and sources for information used in the ARDUN brochure: First, it contains copies of the original ARDUN development, sales and assembly literature. It has ARDUN information compiled by Doug King of KING ENTERPRISES in Castro Valley, California, reprints from magazines by Petersen Publishing Co. of Los Angeles, California, and contains a dedication page to TOM SENTER, 1943-1983 who authored the three issue ARDUN article known as "ARDUN White Papers" and published in Hot Rod Magazine. I would also like to give recognition and credit to Clem Tebow and Don Clark, owners of C-T Automotive, Dean Butler for his information on ARDUN powered Allards, and of course to the engineers we all hold close in our hearts, Zora and Yura Arkus-Duntov, the creators of the original hemispherical ARDUN aluminum heads later copied by Chrysler in the sixties in their Hemi engine, and lastly to recognize Zora as the Founding Father of the Corvette automobile. Here is what Street Rodder Magazine said about the ARDUN in the Spring of 2008: "Fewer than 300 of the regular ARDUN sets had been made and possibly not even two-dozen of the V8-60 version, yet their legend loomed so large that, beginning nearly ten years ago, reproductions of the original conversion kit have been produced for sale at a price of $13,950.
